Do you want a new website? Please realise that the website in itself is not the goal, it’s a means of achieving a goal. It’s nice to have a beautiful website, but what do you want to accomplish with it? To have a successful website, it’s important to have a plan in advance. Here are three questions to help you plan your website well:
1. Who is the website for?
Which people have to see your website? Do you have a specific target group which you hope will visit your website? Think about who you want to reach with your website, so you can use that as a basis for the next decisions. From design to photography to the texts on your website, you can use it all to focus on reaching your target group and serve them as good as possible with your website. Your website design will probably look very different if you want to reach teenagers or business people or elderly people. Know who you want to reach in the first place, so you can optimise your website for them.
2. What will people do on your website?
What is the most important reason people are visiting your website? Or what would you like them to do on your website? Are they visiting to find information, to buy a product or to contact you? Maybe they’re visiting for multiple reasons, but what is the main task they’re coming to perform? If you have the answer to that question, you can be more goal oriented with the design and content. Most people are impatient online these days, so the faster they can find what they’re looking for, the happier they will be and more successful you will be. So know why people visit and what you’d like them to do at your website.
3. How do you make it as easy as possible for your visitors?
Once you know who is visiting your website and why they are there, you can start thinking about how to make it as easy as possible for them. An accessible website with a clear menu is a good base, but there is more than that. If you know for example that the most important reason for people to visit your website is to contact you, you can also show a contact form right on the homepage. Or if they’re coming to your website to read a blog, you can show the latest posts on your homepage.
Whatever the goal of your website is, if you take time to think about it at the start, you can work much more strategically. Also, once the website is there, you can see better if the website is successful by checking if the goal is being reached. Are people contacting you via the website? Are products been sold online? Can people find the information they’re looking for?
